For treatment of musculoskeletal problems and pain, trigger point dry needling is an invasive procedure in which a sterile, thin, solid filament needle is inserted through the skin and muscle directly into a myofascial trigger point. Trigger points are associated with a characteristic referred pain pattern and are often responsible for prolonged pain complaints as well as muscle dysfunction.
Georgia is one of a growing number of states whose state board has approved dry needling as part of a comprehensive physical therapy treatment plan. While there are similarities to acupuncture, dry needling is based strictly on Western medicine principles and evidence-based research. The physical therapists at Performance Physical Therapy are not licensed acupuncturists and do not practice acupuncture.
